Hua Hin means

“stone head” and it is easy to see how this beautiful coastal town of Thailand derived from this name when you walk along it’s golden shores. 233 km’s (145 miles) south of Bangkok, Hua Hin is a perfect blend of old and new and it’s greatest achievement is refusing to compromise itself. It is one of Thailand’s top beach resort destinations and is relatively unspoilt. Hua Hin first appealed to the Thai aristocrat and latterly to the world traveller. A Holiday Palace was even constructed here for the Royal Family - Klai Kangwon (meaning “Far from Worries”) and is enjoyed by the Royals (His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej and family) for several months of the year. Hua Hin is also known and very proud to have virtually no crime. The Railway station is a historic attraction with it’s tiered, gabled roofs and classic Thai design. Here they even have a Royal Waiting Room for the Royal Family. The train journey from Bangkok takes approximately 4.5 hours (Do make sure if you take this option of travel to book 1st class with air con). Hua Hin also boasts world famous Golf courses in this region. The Buddhist shrines of Khao Takiap (“Chopstick Hill”) and scattered around Hua Hin, continue to conjure a sense of religious awe. There is an indelible Thai identity and Hua Hin remains essentially a family resort where the simple things in life can be enjoyed and one can be more in touch with nature. For those wanting to “shop till you drop” there are abundant night markets and there are also a couple of large modern shopping malls in the area to lighten your wallet. Hua Hin is also only 2,5 hours drive into Bangkok. There is an air conditioned mini bus that only charges 160 Baht per person one way leaving from Hua Hin every 40 minutes into central Bangkok, making it very accessible and affordable for a day’s shopping spree. Thailand is the “land of smiles” and a cheerful “Sawasdee” – Thai greeting – will not go ignored here. Lastly, remember you are in Thailand and showing respect to their culture and way of life is important here. Here are a few (of many) tips : Please do respect the Thai’s and their local tradition. Do not make eye contact with any Monks and do not touch anyone on their head or point with your feet – this is seen here as bad mannered. Also please note to dress modestly – topless bathing in Hua Hin will not be tolerated and when going to the temples, ensure you are well covered up and also do not display any signs of affection in public as it is frowned upon and seen as disrespectful. Also never ever mock, laugh or insult a Thai, or any member of the Royal Family – it is seen as a criminal offence. Do not show annoyance, impatience or aggression of any form. Thai’s are very peaceful and quiet people. Road Rage here is unacceptable. When driving in Thailand and someone hoots, it is normally a warning that they are about to overtake you and unlike the west, is not considered rude. If someone flashes their lights – it is a WARNING NOT TO GO and not a polite gesture to go. If you come across a Thai that cannot speak English (in remote places) – have patience - they have no need to speak or learn the language and have been living here happily for years without having to speak it. However many Thai’s can speak English – especially in shopping areas and tourist attractions. Thailand is very laid back and time is of no importance which makes it one of the world’s best holiday destinations to unwind and relax in. ENJOY !
